(WAUPUN) Wapun is taking more steps to prevent future floods like the one it had in June of 2024. Tuesday night, the city council approved $300,000 to buy five acres of land on Gateway Drive to build a stormwater retention pond. Mayor Rohn Bishop told WBEV that one of the reasons flooding is getting bad in Wapun is the increased use of tile drainage on area farm fields.
โThe problem for the city is all this water is running off the farm fields faster than it used to. And because Waupun is in a lower area, water flows into our city faster than Harris Creek and the Rock River can handle it.โ
City leaders also have commissioned two studies looking into flood mitigation options.
