The Waupun baseball team looks to be in the thick of the East Central Conference championship race this season, despite have a very youthful roster.
There will be alot new faces in new roles in 2022 as Warriors head coach Derrick Standke tells DailyDodge.com that 18 of the 30 players in this year’s program are freshman. The varsity squad has two seniors, two juniors, five sophomores, and four freshman. Sophomore Evan Sauer was a 2nd Team All-East Central Wisconsin pick during his freshman campaign in 2021.
Standke says that he’s happy his young team has been able to get some games in early to prepare for the conference schedule. “Getting those reps in early and helping them become more consistent and picking up the speed and really doing a lot of the small things that we really push over here in Waupun. And once they grasp on to those, they will be successful, and we expect to be near the top of the conference”
The Warriors shared the East Central crown with Kettle Moraine Lutheran and are off to a 2-2 start this season. The Warriors dropped their first two contests to Freedom and Winnebago Lutheran, before ripping off a pair of wins over Sheboygan Falls and Winneconne in their ECC opener on Tuesday night.
The Baseball Wisconsin Yearbook predicted the Warriors to finish 2nd behind Kettle Moraine Lutheran in the 2022 ECC race.
Waupun was ranked #20 in the 2022 Baseball Wisconsin Yearbook Division Two Preseason Top 22.
