Baseball players in Waupun are gearing up for the Badgerland Summer High School League which kicks off this week across South Central Wisconsin. Waupun head coach Derrick Standke says that his team has worked hard in fall leagues, and attended many open gyms over the winter to get ready for the WIAA and American Legion seasons before COVID-19 denied those opportunities. He says after a lot of sitting and waiting this spring they are looking forward to the opportunity to play.
Waupun has 13 players out for the varsity team, with five of those being seniors. Standke says that the team philosophy will be a bit more relaxed than a typical WIAA or American Legion season. He says across the board the team’s goals are to have a good time and maybe learn a new spot. Standke adds that some of the younger players are also out to prove themselves as they try and earn a position on next year’s team.
During a typical American Legion season, Waupun wouldn’t be practicing very much, but with a pretty inactive summer Standke says they have schedule three practices a week to try and get their bodies into game shape.
Standke think’s Waupun’s pitching should be pretty deep, this season, with a lot of different guys getting an opportunity on the mound. With games pretty much every Monday through Thursday in July, they will need eight to ten pitchers on the hill per week.
Waupun’s varsity will open up the season tonight when they travel to St. Mary’s Springs in Fond du Lac. They will play an 18-game varsity schedule.
Waupun will also have a JV and JV2 squad.
