Watertown to Dedicate Permanent Vietnam Memorial Wall

(WATERTOWN) People across southern Wisconsin will soon have a permanent place to honor those who served and died in the Vietnam War.

The City of Watertown plans to dedicate a permanent installation of a replica Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall on Memorial Day at Aero Park. The ceremony is scheduled for Monday, May 25, from 3 to 4 p.m.

The traveling wall replica has spent years visiting communities around the country. City leaders say the permanent installation will create a lasting space for reflection and remembrance in Watertown. Organizers say it is the largest replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in the Midwest north of St. Louis.

The ceremony will begin with an F-35 flyover by Lt. Col. Zachary Krueger, commander of the Air Forceโ€™s 378th Fighter Squadron. Blackhawk helicopters will also be on display.

Natalie Popp, Miss Wisconsin Teen 2025, is scheduled to perform the national anthem.

Daniel J. Seehafer, past national commander of The American Legion, will deliver the keynote address. Seehafer, a Wisconsin native and Navy chaplain, has been involved in veterans advocacy for decades and continues work through the Legionโ€™s โ€œBe the Oneโ€ suicide prevention initiative.

Other guests expected to attend include State Sen. John Jagler, State Rep. William Petterman, and Watertown Mayor Robert Stocks.

Additional speakers and participants include memorial wall engraver Barry Lawrence, Marine Corps League Detachment 349 Commandant Gary Stueber, American Legion Post 189 Commander Stephen Zillmer and Ryan Hepp of Jerry Hepp Excavating.

Organizers expect large crowds and will offer shuttle service from 1 to 5 p.m. Parking and shuttle pickup locations include Glory Global, Griffin Armament, Innerpak, Watertown Municipal Airport and the National Guard Armory. Handicap parking will be available at Aero Park and the armory.

People attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. The event will happen rain or shine.

Once dedicated, the memorial will remain open year-round, 24 hours a day, with overnight lighting for visitors.
