(Watertown) Area law enforcement is warning residents of a frightening scam that is making the rounds. The Watertown Police Department is bringing awareness to the โkidnapping scam.โ
Officials with the department say scammers are placing a phone call to the victim and telling them a loved one has been taken. Threats of violence soon follow unless a ransom โ typically in the form of a wire transfer โ is paid. Authorities say the most disturbing aspect of these calls is that the scammers will play recordings of screams in the background.
They add that his can be very scary for the individual receiving the call but note to always verify that your loved ones are safe before sending any money. The Watertown Police Department say scammers know that using fear and trying to make you act fast is in their favor.
They say to never feel pressured into sending money to someone you do not know.
