(Watertown) The Watertown Fire Department is urging safety as citizens begin turning on their furnaces this fall. Officials with the agency say as the colder months approach, many are firing up their furnaces for the first time in a while.
They add that it is important to keep your family safe from the dangers of carbon monoxide. Safety tips include having our furnace inspected as well as making sure a qualified technician checks the furnace and vents for any issues that could cause dangerous carbon monoxide buildup.
The Watertown Fire Department recommends installing a carbon monoxide detector, which is the first line of defense for alerting a homeowner of high levels of this deadly gas. They note that carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and tasteless โ referring to it as a silent killer.
Proper ventilation is also important. Blocked or damaged vents can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Officials encourage the public to clear any debris around your furnace, chimney, or exhaust vent. Signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion.
