Watertown Fire Department Urge Citizens To Fully Extinguish Smoking Materials

(Watertown) The Watertown Fire Department is reminding the public to always extinguish smoking materials fully. Their message comes after a weekend house fire in the city.

The department was called to East Main Street around 11am Saturday. Upon arrival, smoke was visible from the front door and porch area. Firefighters utilized a hose line to gain access to the living area and basement of the home. A primary search of the structure was conducted to ensure all occupants were out.

Two occupants were waiting outside when crews arrived on scene, and one of them was transported to a local hospital for possible smoke inhalation. Officials with the fire department say a dog was rescued from the home and is in good condition.

The blaze was extinguished by 11:30am and firefighters left the scene by approximately 12:23pm. Officials say the cause of the fire was determined to be from smoking materials that fell under the porch.

They encourage all residents to always extinguish smoking materials fully in a sturdy, non-combustible container and to never toss them in mulch, trash, or dry vegetation.
