(Beaver Dam) The Wisconsin State Legislature recently passed a constitutional amendment question that will appear on the April ballot. The question will ask citizens if they want voter identification to be constitutionally protected. Representative Mark Born of Beaver Dam says it is currently state law.
โWe have seen more and more people in the last decade that people are just sue happy and want to take everything to court all the time,โ says Born. โAnd we donโt want courts legislating from the bench say โyeah, itโs the law now, but we donโt think it should be, itโs not constitutional for whatever reason.โโ
Born supports the initiative.
โIt doesnโt bring total accountability or anything like that to elections,โ Born says. โThere are other things in place thereโs other laws. Thereโs other, you know, work that clerks do and stuff to help ensure the integrity of our elections. But this one seems like a pretty simple small one.โ
The representative says that if passed that it would be locked into the state and cement that voter ID will always be a part of elections in Wisconsin.
