Unlit Stove Pilot Light Causes Natural Gas Leak At Portage Assisted Living Facility

(Portage) An unlit stove pilot light caused a natural gas leak at an assisted living facility in Portage Tuesday. The Portage Fire Department was called to Our House Senior Living on 215 Northridge Drive just before 7:30pm.

Upon arrival, crews found residents evacuating the building. Firefighters began to investigate and found high levels of natural gas in the area of the kitchen. It was determined that one of the stove pilot lights was not lit. Fire Chief Troy Haase says they isolated the stove then shut off the gas. He says multiple crews entered the structure to assist with the evacuation of the remaining residents.

A male resident reported difficulties breathing and an ambulance was dispatched which transported him to the hospital. Haase says all occupants were moved to an adjacent facility while fire crews ventilated the structure. He says there were no injuries and all residents returned to their rooms without incident.
