Two Displaced After Overnight House Fire in Waupun

(WAUPUN) Two people are starting Thursday without a place to sleep after a late-night house fire left a home on Watertown Street unlivable.

Fire crews were called to a house at 25 N. Watertown St. just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after smoke was spotted coming from the roof. When firefighters arrived, they found the fire had spread into the attic, making it difficult to reach from inside the home, according to the Waupun Fire Department.

Crews cut a ventilation hole near the peak of the roof to get water on the fire and stop it from spreading. Once the main flames were knocked down, firefighters worked to fully access the attic and make sure the fire was completely out. The response lasted about three hours.

The fire damaged the attic and caused additional water damage throughout the house. Officials say the home is uninhabitable, and two people were displaced. The Red Cross is helping them find temporary housing.

No injuries were reported among firefighters or residents. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Multiple departments from Dodge and Fond du Lac counties assisted at the scene, along with Waupun police, first responders, EMS crews, utility companies and county dispatchers.
