(Wisconsin) Tuesday is Lightning Awareness Day in Wisconsin. With warmer temps during the summer months, officials with Ready Wisconsin say storms can develop quickly, bringing with them unpredictable lightning strikes.
According to the National Lightning Safety Council, 12 people were killed by lightning in the U.S. last year. Since 2006, there have been 10 lightning related deaths in Wisconsin.
Officials recommend paying attention to the forecast, take immediate shelter if a severe storm develops, and stay out of open areas. They also encourage people to wait at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before going back outdoors.
If someone is struck by lightning, call 911 immediately and start CPR if you are trained.
