(JUNEAU) The trial of a former Waupun Correctional Institution nurse for the death of an inmate in 2023 is underway.
Prosecutors argue Gwendolyn Vick failed to act as 24-year-old Cameron Williamsโ health quickly worsened before his death.
They allege Vick knew about concerns for Williamsโ health, but suggested waiting to enter his cell after he stopped responding to staff.
Williams was found dead the next morning from a rare stroke.
Vick, 53, is charged with abuse of residents of penal facilities, a felony, and violating state or county institution laws, a misdemeanor. Together, a conviction could mean up to four years in state custody.
Her trial began on Monday. It is scheduled to last until next Friday.
This is a bench trial, meaning her guilt will be decided by the judge without a jury.
Vick is the first of nine former Waupun staffers to go to trial. Three others charged in connection with inmate abuse or deaths at the prison are still in the court system.
Three others reached plea agreements, and two of the accused had their charges dismissed.
