(WAUPUN) A traffic stop in Fond du Lac County turned into an hours long SWAT standoff Sunday night after deputies say a wanted man led officers on a high-speed chase before barricading himself inside a Town of Waupun home.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy tried to stop a vehicle around 7:58 p.m. on County Highway TC near County Highway M because of a registration violation. Investigators said the driver gave a false name, but the deputy recognized him as a parole absconder wanted on robbery-related charges and several bench warrants, including resisting or obstructing an officer.
According to the sheriff’s office, the driver sped away from the stop at more than 100 mph and drove about two miles to a home on Hemp Road. Deputies said the suspect ran inside and refused repeated commands to come out.
Deputies from the sheriff’s office, along with officers from the Waupun Police Department, Fond du Lac Police Department, and Wisconsin State Patrol, surrounded the property and tried for several hours to negotiate a peaceful surrender.
Authorities later called in the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and the Fond du Lac Police Department SWAT team because of the complexity of the scene and the number of outbuildings on the property.
Investigators said SWAT teams eventually used armored vehicles and mechanical breaching equipment to create openings in two doors while a search warrant was being finalized and approved by a judge.
Three adults, including the original suspect, later came out of the home and were taken into custody, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies said they also searched the home and surrounding buildings after learning a fourth person with warrants might still be inside, but no one else was found.
No injuries were reported.
Several agencies assisted at the scene, including LifeStar EMS, North Fond du Lac Ambulance, the Waupun Fire Department, Alliant Energy and the Town of Waupun.
