Scammers Target Dodge County With Fake Law Enforcement Calls

(JUNEAU) Dodge County residents are being warned about a scam involving fake arrest warrants, as sheriff’s offices across the region report an increase in holiday-season fraud.

Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt says someone is impersonating a member of his office, claiming to be Sergeant Tom Williams, and telling people they have a warrant for contempt of court. The caller then directs victims to report to a location, where he claims he will collect a bond or uses other tactics to steal money.

At the same time, Green Lake County officials are reporting a rise in jury duty scams. The sheriff’s office there says the scheme has grown more elaborate, now using social media along with phone calls to make the messages appear legitimate.

Authorities in both counties stress that law enforcement will not demand payment over the phone or threaten arrest if money is not immediately provided. Anyone who receives a call like this is advised not to respond.

If you’re unsure whether a call is legitimate, officials recommend contacting your county’s clerk of courts office or sheriff’s department directly using a verified number.
