(WATERTOWN) Watertown is welcoming a new way to save young lives. A Safe Haven Baby Box will be available at the Watertown Fire Department located at 621 Bernard Street.
Since 2016, the program has provided a discreet and secure option for parents to surrender their newborns. In addition to the baby boxes, the organization provides a confidential national hotline.
Over the last eight years, 61 infants have been safely and legally surrendered in a baby box. The National Safe Haven Crises line has assisted with over 153 handoff surrenders.
Surrendered infants are adopted by families who have registered as foster-to-adopt. The Local Department of Family Services coordinates the adoption process.
Watertownโs Baby Box marks the seventh in Wisconsin and the 359th across the country. The city is holding a dedication ceremony on Thursday at 2:30pm.
