Residents Displaced Following Waupun Apartment Fire

(Waupun) Residents of a Waupun apartment complex have been displaced following a fire Wednesday. The Waupun Fire Department was called to Parkview Apartments at 1106 Rock Avenue at 1:15pm for a fire in a second-floor unit.

Upon arrival, crews found flames had spread to a second apartment as well as the eaves and stretched the length of the building. All occupants were out of the structure once firefighters reached the scene, allowing them to immediately begin suppression efforts. Some of the ceilings in four units needed to be removed due to the fire spreading into the attic space.

Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa says most of the blaze was knocked down in 45 minutes, but crews remained on scene for over three hours checking for hot spots. Two of the two-story apartment buildingโ€™s 16-units sustained significant damage including parts of the roofโ€™s structure. Four other units suffered water damage.

A family assistance center was set up at the Waupun Senior Center for the 22 residents. DeMaa says 19 individuals are currently being assisted by the American Red Cross. He says it is unknown at this time how long the building will be closed and there are currently no damage estimates.

There were no injuries reported. An investigation is ongoing, but DeMaa says the fire appears to have originated on a second-floor balcony. Any residents of the apartment still needing help are encouraged to call the Waupun Fire Department at 920-324-7910.
