Poynette Police Release Additional Details About Seven-Year-Old Who Was Shot In The Leg

(Poynette) Authorities in Columbia County provided more details Tuesday about a weekend incident that resulted in a child being shot in the leg. The seven-year-old suffered a non-life-threatening bullet wound to her upper-thigh Saturday afternoon on West Seward Street in Poynette.

Police Chief Adam Rogge says the victim was shot by another male juvenile under the age of 10. He says during their investigation, Andrew Long of Poynette was arrested on charges of Leaving or Storing a Loaded Firearm within Reach or Easy Access of a Child and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Columbia County District Attorney Brenda Yaskal says the charge Long was arrested for is a misdemeanor and has not been formally charged. She says because Poynette Police Department’s investigation is still ongoing, her office does not have the summary of their findings. When they do get it, she says prosecutors will review the report and determine what if any criminal charges are warranted for Long or any others involved.

Yaskal says those reports should be available before August 17th, which is when Long is scheduled to make his initial appearance in court. She adds that Long has posted bail and he has been corporative during the investigation. Authorities did not say whether the male juvenile who fired the weapon and the girl were siblings but did mention they live in separate homes.
