Poppies Will Be Available This Memorial Day Weekend

(Beaver Dam) The American Legion Auxiliary will once again be distributing poppies this Memorial Day weekend.  Volunteers will be in front of five Beaver Dam locations: Fleet Farm, Shopko, Rechek’s Food Pride, Culvers and Piggly Wiggly Friday and Saturday passing out poppies in honor of American war heroes and in remembrance of those who died defending their country. Poppy Chairperson Pat Lampert says this initiative started in 1919 following battle in France in which many American soldiers lost their lives. She says the poppy was then turned over to the American Legion Auxiliary in 1921. According to Lampert, each part of the poppy has a symbolic meaning to reflect the times of war that the veterans have experienced. Donations of any amount are accepted in exchange for a poppy. All proceeds are invested in local programs to benefit veterans and their families.
