(MADISON) When members of the National Guard and Reserve in Wisconsin are on active duty, their military income is exempt from state income taxes. But not so when they’re performing any other required duties. A bipartisan bill would make all Guard and Reserve income exempt from state taxes.
“Sometimes our Guard and Reserve members are paying income tax, sometimes they’re not. So it’s a little confusing,” said state Rep. William Penterman (R-Hustisford), authors of the legislation. “So what my bill would do is to exempt Wisconsin income tax for all military members here in the state.”
Supporters of the bill note that the tax break would make Wisconsin more attractive for service members. Several other states have similar laws. Penterman’s bill has been referred to the Assembly Committee on Veterans and Military Affairs for consideration.
