One Person Killed After Head On Collision In Columbus

(Columbus) One person was killed after a head on collision that occurred early Saturday morning on Highway 16 in the township of Columbus. The preliminary investigation shows that a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, operated by a 55-year-old male, was travelling westbound in the eastbound lane near Rhodes Bake-N-Serve at 2:30am. The vehicle struck a 2008 Buick Lucerne, driven by a 26-year-old male, traveling eastbound in the correct lane. The 55-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene after life saving measures were administered. The 26-year-old was transported to a nearby hospital and was treated for minor injuries. Names are being withheld pending notification of family. Alcohol and failure to wear a seatbelt are believed to be factors in the crash. Highway 16 was closed for approximately three and half hours while the accident was cleared. The crash remains under investigation by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
