(Beaver Dam) The old Lakeview Hospital should be down by the end of the year. The city of Beaver Dam’s Operations Committee this week signed-off on hiring of Badgerland Demolition of De Pere to demolish the dilapidated structure for $386-thousand dollars, pending council approval later this month.
In October, the city purchased the La Crosse Street building for $225-thousand dollars from the Beaver Dam Community Hospital. The costs for the acquisition, asbestos removal and demolition are being paid with revenue from a new lakefront Tax Increment Finance District. The old hospital and an adjacent property are being developed into high-end, lakefront condominiums. The new development is expected to add $4-million dollars to the tax rolls.
Asbestos removal should be completed by October 31. Dirty Ducts Cleaning and Environmental of Madison was hired last month to remove hazardous materials for $483-thousand dollars. The deadline for demolition is two months later by December 1. The property is expected to be turned over to the developer on February 1. At just under $1.1-million dollars, the demolition project would be coming in below initial estimates of $1.2-million dollars.
Also this week, the common council approved the hiring of Guelig Waste Removal and Demolition of Eden to raze the former Beaver Cleaners on West Maple Avenue for $50-thousand dollars. The property adjacent to the new community theatre building should be leveled in the next 45 days. It is being turned into a city-owned parking lot.
