(Calamus) One person was killed two-days after a two-vehicle crash in the township of Calamus. Dodge County sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene on Highway 151 at County Road DE just after 3pm Tuesday. The initial investigation showed that a Mercury Sable, operated by an 83-year-old man from rural Beaver Dam, was heading south on DE and stopped at the stop sign to Highway 151. There was an 82-year-old woman passenger in the vehicle, also from rural Beaver Dam. Authorities say the Mercury pulled away from the stop sign and a Chevrolet Malibu traveling south on 151 collided with the car as it was attempting to crossover the highway. The Chevrolet was driven by a 57-year-old woman with a 54-year-old male passenger, both from rural Crivitz. The driver of the Mercury was extricated and transported by helicopter to UW Hospital and died on May 11th. The passenger of the Mercury was taken to Marshfield Medical Center – Beaver Dam with non-life-threatening injuries. The operator and passenger of the Chevrolet were also taken to the Beaver Dam hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

(Dodge County) The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection confirmed yesterday (Friday) that a Dodge County deer farm has tested positive for chronic wasting disease. The positive sample was taken from a nine-year-old doe. The 8-acre farm has been placed under quarantine, meaning no live animals or whole carcasses are permitted to leave the property. The herd will remain under quarantine while an investigation is conducted. CWD is a fatal, neurological disease of deer, elk, and moose caused by an infectious protein called a prion (pree-on) that affects the animal’s brain, and official testing for CWD is typically only performed after the animal’s death.

(Beaver Dam) A one-day jury trial was scheduled yesterday (Friday) for a Beaver Dam man accused of assaulting his girlfriend. Martin Macias (mah-see-ahs) is facing three felony counts of Second Degree Sexual Assault – Use of Force. Beaver Dam police were dispatched to the hospital last January to investigate a domestic incident. The victim reportedly told law enforcement that Macias had beating her with a leather belt, metal spatula, and wooden spoon causing severe bruising and redness. She allegedly said the 28-year-old then sexually assaulted her. According to the criminal complaint, the victim said their infant child was nearby and witnessed the attack. If convicted, Macias faces up to 120 years in prison.

(Columbia County) The state of Wisconsin has revoked licenses for 38 wholesale dealers for failing to follow administrative requirements. The Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles determined that each dealer violated state law when they failed to maintain a licensed business facility. The decision to revoke was affirmed by a hearing examiner decision on April 6th. Following a 30-day appeal period, the revocations became final on May 6th. Each business is co-located at 101 Skyline Drive in Arlington.

(Beaver Dam) Beaver Dam Middle School students took part in community service activities yesterday (Friday). In all, 700 students selected an activity and gave about one-and-a-half hours of their time to serve the Beaver Dam community. Some of the activities included washing and waxing fire trucks, baking goodies for local heroes, assisting elementary students at Wilson, cleaning up garbage, and beautifying local streets and parks. Students also created craft projects that will be donated to area nursing homes, shelters, and assisted living centers, packed hygiene kits and made blankets for local shelters, and created greeting cards for Bo’s Heavenly Clubhouse as well as area servicemen and women. School officials say their service will extend beyond Beaver Dam as decorated pillowcases and paracord lanyards will be used by military members near and far. They say that students also had the opportunity to beautify the grounds and the inside of the Beaver Dam Middle School, adding that they will be servicing local businesses to assist with any needed projects. Middle school officials say they are proud of their students and their dedication to volunteering their time to give back to the community.

(Beaver Dam) The Beaver Dam Lake Improvement Association says their 27th annual fundraising banquet was a success. The organization notes that over 175 individuals and businesses donated during the solicitation campaign, and around 240 people attended this year’s banquet at Bayside Supper Club. Proceeds will allow the Association to implement lake management actions to improve Beaver Dam lake in support of their Lake Management Plan. Officials add that all funds are used in the community, and they do not go to any state or national organizations. Beaver Dam Lake Improvement Association also thanked the over 40 volunteers who worked countless hours to solicit donations, coordinate, and manage the banquet.

(Beaver Dam) Tyler Soto of Fond du Lac will be the alumni speaker at the Spring 2023 Moraine Park Technical College Commencement Ceremony. Soto was one of the first students to graduate from Moraine Park’s Human Resources program in 2016. Soto says he enjoyed the courses and was able to build his foundation at Moraine Park. He has worked in human resources for eight years and is currently a human resource manager for Whisker-an innovative pet technology company known for creating the self-cleaning litter box called Litter-Robot. Whisker received the College’s New Partner of the Year Award in 2022 for Soto’s work on becoming a Workforce Advancement Grant partner to run multiple supervisor courses. Soto says his advice to recent graduates is to be understanding, be patient and work hard.
