(MAYVILLE) After eight months, Mayville is still looking for a new medical clinic. SSM Health closed its clinic in Mayville last September. Longer drives to the doctor were predictable, but the change is also putting an unexpected strain on local emergency responders due to people seeking basic primary care.
“There’s been a startling uptick in people calling to say, ‘I think I have strep throat, can you take me somewhere?'” said Mayville Healthcare Committee Chairman Alan Williams. “It’s certainly something that needs to be done, and we want to take care of our citizens, but when there’s a car accident or a fire, that’s what EMS is truly designed for.”
Williams said finding a new provider has been challenging. Of six companies he’s contacted, he said only two have returned his messages.
