Military Funeral Honors Planned For Wisconsin Civil War Veteran

MARSHFIELD – A Wisconsin Civil War veteran will be recognized Saturday with military funeral honors in Marshfield.

The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs says the ceremony for Casper Zinthefer is scheduled for 12PM Saturday, June 20, at Corpus Christi Catholic Cemetery on County Highway BB.

The ceremony was requested by Zintheferโ€™s great-granddaughter, Fran LeMahieu, according to the announcement.

Zinthefer immigrated from Germany to New York in 1856. Five years later, he was registered as a member of the New York Militia. He enlisted in the Union Army on Aug. 29, 1862, serving with Company G of the 173rd New York Infantry Regiment.

According to the announcement, Zinthefer was wounded in the head in April 1863 while fighting Confederate forces occupying Port Hudson, Louisiana. Because of the extent of his injuries, he was relieved from active duty on the front lines and transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps of the Union Army. He served the rest of the war around Baltimore, Maryland.

After the war, Zinthefer moved to Wisconsin in 1870 and lived in the state for more than 30 years. He died in Marshfield on March 4, 1904.
