Mayville Has Sights Set On Conference Title Defense In 2025

The Mayville Cardinals football team has become synonymous with deep postseason runs as of late.

Fresh off another impressive campaign, there’s a lot of repetition: the same goal, same mantra and even the same season-opening opponent.

2024 Season Recap

The Cardinals logged a 10-2 record in 2024 that ended in a level 3 playoff berth.

Mayville used a 6-1 league record to claim a third of the Flyway Conference title in the process.

With over 3,200 rushing yards on the season, it was the ground game that led an offense successful enough to average nearly 34 points per contest.

Sawyer Hardesty paced the backfield, tallying 1,249 yards to the tune of 15 touchdowns, both team highs.

Winning The Line Of Scrimmage

When looking at Wisconsin high school football, we’d be remised to not mention that games are decided at the line of scrimmage.

Luckily for Cardinal fans, there will be four familiar faces putting their hand in the ground for the team this fall.

“When you can bring back experience on the offensive line, that’s where most of the chess pieces are,” head coach Scott Hilber said.

Landon Baker (77 rushes, 474 yds last year) will benefit from this strong offensive line.

According to Hilber, Baker has all of the tools someone could ask for in a running back.

“He’s the full package,” Hilber said. “He absolutely loves football, asking me for the keys to get equipment and get on the field all of the time.”

The Tough, Tough Flyway

If you’re in search of hard-nosed, competitive football, look no further than the Flyway Conference. Saint Mary’s Springs has made a habit of finishing atop the league, Lomira went out and won a gold ball last year and Mayville was right in the mix with both squads.

Coach Hilber said there’s no better conference to help a team in late October, and hopefully early November, football games.

“It’s the brand of football that really prepares you for the playoffs,” he said.

The Road Ahead

The Cardinals will start their 2025 campaign with a non-conference tilt against Cedar-Grove Belgium on Aug. 22, a showdown that has become tradition for this team.
