Wisconsin May Benefit From Relationship With India
5/12/14 – Wisconsin may benefit from a budding relationship with India. Diplomats from the nation of India were in the Badger state last week to meet with the governor and other industry officials. Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce President Phil Fritsche is also the president-elect of the statewide Chamber of Commerce Executives Association. Fritsche joined representatives with Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, the state Economic Development Corporation, Commerce and Agriculture departments. The Indian government is seeking to expand its trade commerce, both exporting and importing, with Wisconsin. Fritsche says the nation is looking for investment opportunities in the US for Indian companies, collaborations that may include having similar plants in India and Wisconsin and generally importing Wisconsin goods. Fritsche says India stands to benefit greatly from Wisconsinโs agricultural legacy. While, for example, the exporting of dairy maybe cost-prohibitive, the technology and logistics of operating a dairy farm that was developed in the US could be a great benefit to India. Fritsche says he has been talking with companies in Beaver Dam that could benefit from the new relationship. More diplomatic and trade missions are anticipated between the two nations in the coming years.

The Dodge County Sheriffโs Office has activated whatโs called the Vine Protection Order. Sheriff Patricia Ninmann says victims can now log-in to Vine to find out exactly when the papers against an offender have been served. Local Pepper Contest
5/12/14 – There is going to be a contest to see who can grow the largest pepper as part of this fallโs Beaver Dam Pepper Festival. Organizers announced last week that that the city will be the site of a celebration for its namesake pepper. The Beaver Dam Pepper was brought to Dodge County, Wisconsin from Hungary over 100 years ago. Somewhere along the way, the original name of the pepper was forgotten and itโs now known across the country as the Beaver Dam Pepper.ย For a nominal fee, gardeners can purchase the heirloom seeds of a Beaver Dam Pepper plant for a chance at winning $100 dollars. Evonne Boettge, with the cityโs Community Activities and Services Department, says eligible gardeners will receive a certificate of authenticity and information on how to grow the seeds. Contestants must purchase the seedlings though the city. They are available in four-packs for $2.75. The plants are grown in-town at the Norm Reier Greenhouse. Boettge recommends giving the Beaver Dam Pepperโs tender loving care, plenty of water and enough time to grow to full maturity.ย She says when the plants are ready, bring the pepper back to the Senior Center with the entry form. The one hundred dollar prize will be awarded during the First Annual Beaver Dam Pepper Festival at the Park Village Shopping Center on October 4.

Long Time Governor Lucey Remembered
5/12/14 – Wisconsin’s longest-serving legislator says former Governor Patrick Lucey will be remembered as one of the state’s most influential citizens. ย State Senate Democrat Fred Risser of Madison said Lucey turned Wisconsin into a “two-party state.” ย The 96-year-old Lucey died Saturday night at the Milwaukee Catholic Home where he lived for several years. ย He had a brief illness. ย Many have credited Lucey with the rise of Wisconsin’s Democratic Party in the wake of the Joe McCarthy era. The La Crosse native chaired the state Democrats in the 1950’s — and he helped former President John F. Kennedy win a key primary in the Badger State in 1960. ย Lucey became governor a decade later, serving the first four-year term in that post. ย He served for most two terms, and was credited with the merger of the U-W and the old State University System in 1972. ย He also reduced the “Age of Majority” in which the age for voting, drinking, marriage, and other adult responsibilities dropped from 21-to-18. ย Lucey also appointed the first female justice to the State Supreme Court — Shirley Abrahamson, who remains the chief justice. ย In 1977, Lucey became the U-S Ambassador to Mexico. ย In ’80, he ran for vice president as an independent with John Anderson. ย He later remained politically involved as a professor at Marquette and Harvard, and as a supporter of Democrats John Kerry and Barack Obama in the past decade. ย Republican Governor Scott Walker praised Lucey as a “dedicated public servant who loved Wisconsin.” ย Funeral arrangements are pending. ย His family expects to have a public memorial service at some point.
