The Marshall Cardinals and Lake Mills L Cats square off tonight at 7 PM in a week two matchup on Daily Dodge TV.
Week 1 In Review
Marshall started their season off in Johnson Creek against the reigning Trailways Conference champions last Thursday. They fell to Tim Wagner’s Blue Jays 34-7 off a stand-out performance from Quarterback Tanner Herman. The Marshall defense struggled with the dual-threat QB and allowed 441 total yards. The Cardinals also had a difficult time running the ball between the tackles as they saw Senior fullback Bowe Meyer rush nine times for only 6 yards.
Lake Mills won a tightly contested matchup 21-12 at Lakeside Lutheran behind the help of two 2nd half Defensive touchdowns by Kaden Smolinski. The first, a 39 yard fumble return TD to give the L Cats a 14-6 3rd quarter lead and the 2nd, a 48 yard Interception to ice the game late in the 4th quarter. The offense put up 287 yards but only had one touchdown to show for it. Tyler Wollin connected on a 47 yard touchdown pass to Dylan Brinkman to start the 2nd half.
Key Players
Marshall Quarterback Brady Kleinheinz is coming off a game where he rushed the ball 5 times for 74 yards after only having 117 rushing yards in his career through his first two seasons. He struggled to find time to throw in the opener and his numbers reflected that (6/17 for 64 yards and an INT). Last year Kleinheinz threw for 17 TDs and 5 INTs, the Cardinals will be looking to get the upperclassman back to his 2023 form Thursday.
Brady Kleinheinz will be looking to seniors Max Timpel and Bowe Meyer to help get the Cardinals back on track. Timpel was a 2nd team all conference player last fall and was the team’s leading receiver. Meyer added over 300 yards on the ground and was a staple of the interior defensively in 2023. Coach Kleinheinz referred to Meyer as a “heart and soul player of this team”.
Lake Mills’ sophomore quarterback, Tyler Wollin, accounted for 251 of the L Cat’s 287 yards last week. He completed 12 of his 19 passes for 186 yards through the air (1 TD, 1 INT) and another 65 on the ground on 11 attempts. His favorite target through week one appears to be Max Ruedebusch who hauled in five catches for 59 yards.
Defensively the L Cats leaned on Tyler Wollin (10 tackles), Thommy Cassady (5 tackles, 1 forced fumble), and Kaden Slominski (Fumble and INT returned for TDs).
Tonight’s Game Details
These two teams will be meeting for the first time since 2017 where Lake Mills saw a 42-15 result go their way.
