Lomira Begins Motivated Title Defense Tour After Raising Division 6 Gold Ball

Last year’s Lomira Lions team claimed a state championship for the first time in the history of its storied program.

The Lions’ calling cards were a superb running game, a lockdown defense and toughness across the board – all guided by a fearless leader in head coach Bryan Gregory.

2024 Season Recap: Division 6 State Champs

You don’t have to look very far to find positives from a group that’ll go down as pioneers in Lomira football history.

Taylor Schaumburg exploded with 2,149 rushing yards with 30 touchdowns on 8.2 yards per carry. Schaumberg earned Flyway Offensive Player of the Year in the process.

Sam Schraufnagel proved to be a game wrecker, logging 9.5 of the team’s 45 total sacks over a 14-game stretch. Schraufnagel got the nod for Flyway Defensive Player of the Year.

In all, the Lions had eight different 1st Team All-Flyway slots.

The Flyway Conference didn’t come without a fight, as Lomira shared the title with Mayville and Saint Mary’s Springs when the regular season was done.

A Target On Their Back

Lions fans have witnessed quite the transformation; from a 2-7 showing in 2022 to a 6-5 performance in 2023, the 12-2 posting, and state title win, in 2025 put a target on this team’s back.

Coach Gregory says that isn’t something his group is going to shy away from.

“People are going to be coming for us,” Gregory said. “We’re going to have that bullseye on our back.”

The 3rd year head coach also said that while his team graduated 16 seniors, the next class is ready to build their own legacy.

Strong Returners

While the Lions graduated 16 seniors, they have a sturdy core leading the team into 2025.

Kolton Wagoner (2nd Team All-Defense) and Dalton Zingsheim (2nd Team All-Defense) return to a defense that allowed less than 11 points per contest last fall.

Trent Kulczewski, one of eight different defenders to record multiple sacks, brings tenacious mentality to the line that could push Lomira into another promising postseason run.

Above all else, while collecting accolades and winning football games is important, coach Gregory has pride knowing that his players are quality people.

“A lot the things you’re proud of with kids like that is just what they’re able to do off the field,” he said. “They’re just great representatives of the program, they take care of business in the classroom… it’s just kids people want to come out and support.”

The Road Ahead

The Lions will start their 2025 campaign with a non-conference tilt against Husticon on August 22nd. Lomira took last year’s matchup by a score of 49-15.
