(Dodge-Jefferson County) Several Beaver Dam businesses have scored big on tobacco compliance checks. In conjunction with the American Lung Association, Wisconsin Wins Program, under Wisconsin law, conducts tobacco compliance checks in both Dodge and Jefferson Counties with trained teams, made up of adults and minors.
During these checks, teams try to purchase tobacco products. Checks are conducted to ensure that retailer employees request and verify ID of youth attempting to buy tobacco products and refuse anyone under the age of 21.
The teams found that many businesses have been doing an excellent job but there is room for improvement in accurately checking IDs. Typically, when an underage sale occurs, the employee does not request an ID until after the sale has been completed, which makes it an illegal sale.
It is encouraged that retailers adopt various options to improve skills including requesting everyone under 40 for ID verification, install registers that require scanning IDs or entering date of birth, and offering incentives to employees that pass compliance checks.
