(Watertown) An extension cord caused a structure fire in Watertown Thursday. The Watertown Fire Department was dispatched to Sand Street shortly after 7am for a fully involved detached garage with flames extended to the home.
Upon arrival, crews pulled three hose lines to the garage to protect the home from further extension. The initial garage fire was knocked down before 7:30am and firefighters continued to work on the home.
Officials say two occupants were outside of the building upon arrival and a sweep of the structure was done to ensure everyone was out safely. The entire fire was finally extinguished before 9am.
An extension cord that was being improperly used was to blame. Officials encourage the public to never use frayed, damage, or repaired cord and plug them directly into wall outlets and not into power strips to prevent overheating.
