The Horicon/Hustisford football team, under a new head coach, is making it a goal to mount momentum after their historic 2023 season.
A Historic 2023 Season
Logging a 10-3 record in year, the Marshmen traveled all the way to the WIAA Division 5 State Semifinals before falling to Aquinas 58-14 to end their campaign.
Horicon’s win total was their greatest since 2018, when Shannon Mueller led that 10-3 squad to level three of the WIAA bracket.
Last year’s unit lit up the scoreboard, averaging 35.5 points per contest under their Conference Head Coach of the Year, Jason Fiacco.
Senior Carter Schwartz led the electric offense under center, tossing for 1,495 yards and 13 touchdowns to nine interceptions. The dynamic running back duo of Alex Davis (conf. leader in rushing yards) and Isaac Howard combined for over 2,100 yards on the ground with 36 scores.
Davis earned 1st Team All-Eastern Suburban Conference honors along with offensive linemen Austin Peplinski.
New Leadership In The Marsh
Tim Meyer now takes over a program aiming to build off last year’s successful run.
Meyer was an assistant for Horicon and the Green Lake 8-man team last season.
He originally began a coaching stint in Randolph back in 2017, helping develop talent at the youth, middle and high school levels.
Once Meyer heard about the opportunity to take over a successful Horicon/Hustisford team, he immediately took the initiative.
“When the job was posted, I had been in contact with Coach Fiacco and the other coaches on staff,” Meyer said. “Then it was just a matter of ‘okay, let’s keep this thing rolling’ and trying to keep the momentum from what we had last year.”
Key Returners
Barrett Meyer played in three games as the Marshmen signal caller in 2023. He is the only returning Horicon player with experience at the quarterback position.
Horicon/Hustisford also returns tight end/fullback Caleb Peplinski and linemen Austin Peplinski for the 2024 season.
The 2024 Season Ahead
As new members of the Capitol North Conference, Horicon will take on 2023 Conference Champions in Lodi (7-0 in conf. play) and Columbus (6-1 in conf. play) in the regular season.
Coach Meyer said he’s already talked to his team about the step up on conference competition.
“I told the kids [at practice] this season is not going to look like last season,” Meyer said. “Not only are they bigger schools than us… they have a tradition of winning.”
The Marshmen will travel to Lomira for their season opener on Aug. 23, and their first conference matchup is with Lake Mills on Sept. 6.
