Hilltopper Football Off To A Fast Start

The Cambria-Friesland High School football team is off to a 4-0 start this season after knocking off Poynette, Dodgeland, Lourdes Academy and Johnson Creek.   The fast start has lifted the Hilltoppers to #8 in this week’s Wissports.net Division Seven High School Football Coaches Poll.

This year’s version of the Toppers returned nine starters on offense and eight on defense and just over 30 players on their roster.

“We have less than 100 kids in the high school.” Hilltoppers head coach Jim Bylsma told 1430 ESPN. “In fact the WIAA’s publication says we are the smallest school in the state running a stand-alone eleven-man program and so when you have 31 or 32 kids, that’s a third of your student body and close to 70% of the boys in the student body that are out.”

The Hilltoppers were picked third in the Trailways Conference by Wissports.net in their preseason poll and Bylsma says they need to stay healthy to be contenders for the league title at the end of the season.

“We are going to have to stay injury free because even though our numbers are up, a lot of our numbers are in our freshman and sophomore class.” Bylsma said.  “Now some of them are capable of giving you varsity minutes, but they may not be able to give you a full varsity game.  We are deeper than we have been for the last several years, but we would still like to be as injury free as possible.”

Cambria-Friesland hosts Deerfield tonight at 7pm.
