Highway 16 Between Columbus and Portage To Be Resurfaced

(Portage) A stretch of Highway 16 between Columbus and Portage will be resurfaced. Governor Tony Evers recently signed a $9.3-million-dollar contract to improve 22-miles of highway in Columbia County.

Crews will also replace the Highway 16 bridge over the Crawfish River, south of Fall River; increase the paved shoulder from three feet to five feet; install shoulder rumble strips and new pavement markings; as well as replace guardrail end terminals.

During construction, Highway 16 will be closed to through traffic between Rio and Columbus as crews replace the bridge. The signed detour will follow Highway 60 and County Road A. The section of 16, between Highway 51 south of Portage and Lincoln Avenue in Rio, will remain open to traffic with flagging operations. Motorists are urged to plan ahead, slow down and avoid distractions when traveling in the work zone.

The project will begin on April 4th and is slated for completion by late October. The work schedule is dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction progress.
