(Beaver Dam) Wisconsin Congressman Glenn Grothman is working to stop Wisconsin’s lake sturgeon from being placed on the endangered species list. He is part of a bipartisan group of the state’s congressional delegation urging the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to exempt Wisconsin from the potential listing.
If the fish species is included, that would jeopardize both the hook and line as well as sturgeon spearing seasons. Something that Grothman told DailyDodge should not happen.
“So its something of great concern,” says Grothman. “The experts in the field in this state informed me that the number of sturgeon is actually going up exponentially. A variety of sportsmen groups took the bull by the horns about forty years ago and we have a lot more sturgeon now and bigger sturgeon.”
Grothman called Lake Winnebago the epicenter for sturgeon spearing in the United State. The US Fish and Wildlife Service have a June 30th deadline to make a decision.
