Governor Talks Better Teacher Pay While At Stop In Lomira

(Lomira) Tony Evers discussed the need to find more funding to help pay teachers better wages while at a recent stop at the Lomira School District. The governor says it is important for teachers to have options.

โ€œWeโ€™re starting with a teacher apprenticeship where theyโ€™d be able to go and as their learning get some compensation so theyโ€™ll stay in the profession,โ€ says Evers. โ€œSo, weโ€™re doing everything we can to expand it.โ€

Evers says it comes down to valuing and honoring our teachers.

โ€œItโ€™s really hard workโ€ฆdoesnโ€™t pay a lotโ€ฆpays someโ€ฆputs food on the table, obviouslyโ€ฆbut itโ€™s a profession that we need to give it some dignity especially when times are tough,โ€ says Evers.

The governor has called for a special session this month to target investments in the stateโ€™s education workforce. Evers is proposing $9.4-million to provide stipends to student teachers and interns, more than $2-million-dollars in stipends for teachers who agree to train and oversee student teachers or interns, and $50,000 for stipends to school library interns.
