(Lomira) Tony Evers discussed the need to find more funding to help pay teachers better wages while at a recent stop at the Lomira School District. The governor says it is important for teachers to have options.
โWeโre starting with a teacher apprenticeship where theyโd be able to go and as their learning get some compensation so theyโll stay in the profession,โ says Evers. โSo, weโre doing everything we can to expand it.โ
Evers says it comes down to valuing and honoring our teachers.
โItโs really hard workโฆdoesnโt pay a lotโฆpays someโฆputs food on the table, obviouslyโฆbut itโs a profession that we need to give it some dignity especially when times are tough,โ says Evers.
The governor has called for a special session this month to target investments in the stateโs education workforce. Evers is proposing $9.4-million to provide stipends to student teachers and interns, more than $2-million-dollars in stipends for teachers who agree to train and oversee student teachers or interns, and $50,000 for stipends to school library interns.
