Flaherty Releases Statement On Mayoral Recall Effort

(Beaver Dam) A former Beaver Dam alderwoman collecting signatures to recall Mayor Becky Glewen has released a statement. Mary Flaherty filed the Intent To Circulate a Recall Petition with the city clerk’s office last Thursday saying the mayor is “fiscal irresponsibility and overtaxing.” Flaherty says that she has no animosity toward Glewen, who she calls “well-intentioned,” and says the recall is not meant to diminish the character of any one individual now serving. She says there is a faction of the community that feels the recent budget increases and policy changes may negatively affect the majority of taxpayers and they feel their voices have fallen on deaf ears among elected officials. Flaherty has 60 days to collect around 1500 signatures; Glewen would then have ten days to challenge the sufficiency of the petition. The potential candidate or candidates in a recall election would have to circulate nomination papers to appear on the ballot alongside the office holder. A recall election would be held on the Tuesday of the sixth week after the petition process is formally approved.
