Fire Chief: Keep Furnace Exhaust Clear of Ice and Snow

(WAUPUN) Firefighters are reminding you to keep an eye on your home’s furnace exhaust in order to stay safe from carbon monoxide poisoning with all the snow and cold. Waupun Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa says if your exhaust is too close to the ground, cold temperatures can freeze condensation and block your vent with ice.

“If it’s too close to the ground, it can restrict the ability of the furnace to exhaust out the side of the house,” De Maa told Daily Dodge. “Every now and then we will come across those situations that potentially result in a carbon monoxide call.”

Firefighters recommend keeping your furnace exhaust clear of snow as well. Beaver Dam got almost a foot of snow last weekend.
