(Fond du Lac) The Fond du Lac Public Library recently announced it will soon be powered by the sun. Installation has begun on an array of 500-watt solar panels on the roof of the library.
The panels were installed on April 4th and will be integrated into the library’s electrical system next month. The library will remain safely accessible throughout the project.
Equipment and materials will remain far away from both the parking lot as well as the north entrance by Sheboygan Street, Chapter 52 Bookstore, the library’s bookstore next door will also not be impacted.
After installation, the new solar panels are expected to generate up to 400 kilowatts a day, which is enough to power more than 25% of the electrical needs of the library.
The library also expects the project will save the city $17,000 per year. Visitors to the library will be able to see the changes, including a display giving live updates. This project was funded by a combination of Capital Improvement funds from the city, funds from the Friends of Fond du lac Public Library, and private donations.
