(Beaver Dam) The Beaver Dam Family Center was packed Wednesday for the official announcement of the local ice rink winning a nationwide contest. The Family Center will receive a $50-thousand dollar LED lighting system for winning the American Hockey League’s Light Like The Pros promotion. The professional lights are the same system used in the Miami Dolphins Hard Rock Stadium and the Pittsburgh Pirates PNC Park. Mayor Becky Glewen commended the public outpouring of support for the ice arena. She says it is no surprise to hear that the citizens of Beaver Dam stepped up to support great organizations like the Family Center. The Family Center represented the Milwaukee Admirals in the American Hockey League based contest. Admirals President John Greenberg says he rallied support from Admiral fans nationwide to help in the voting process. Ephesus Lighting sponsored the promotion and is providing the lights that will be installed over the summer months. Spokesperson Doug Drotman says the new lights are state-of-the-art. He says the lights will save roughly 70-percent in energy costs, are low maintenance, and due to low heat discharge will improve ice conditions. More than 150-thousand online votes were cast since the contest launched in January. The original lighting was replaced ten years ago with a low-interest loan from Alliant Energy that officials say paid for itself with energy savings.
