Earth Day Cleanup Invites Community to Pitch In Downtown

(BEAVER DAM) Keeping downtown Beaver Dam clean could be as simple as giving up an hour on a Saturday morning.

That’s the goal behind this year’s Earth Day events, where volunteers are invited to grab gloves, bags and a map — and help pick up trash across the downtown area.

“Most importantly, we pick up trash,” said Marilyn Thomas, who chairs the Downtown Beaver Dam Earth Day Committee. “It’s just an hour… we’ll put you in small groups, give you a map, send you off.”

The cleanup starts at 9 a.m. April 25, with check-in behind the Farmers and Merchants Union Bank on Front Street. Organizers say all supplies are provided, including paper bags to avoid adding more waste.

“It’s all about keeping downtown clean and beautiful,” Thomas said. “Everybody has fun grabbing trash.”

The cleanup is just one part of a full day of Earth Day activities. A tree planting ceremony follows at 10:30 a.m., along with art projects, recycling-themed crafts and other events throughout the day.

Earth Day, founded by Wisconsin native Gaylord Nelson, has grown into a global effort to protect the environment.
