(Juneau) The Dodge County treasurer is reminding taxpayers to review their 2024 property assessment. Kris Keith says this is the time of year assessors begin finalizing assessments.
She adds that a propertyโs assessment is a snapshot of that propertyโs status as of January 1st each year. Decemberโs real estate bills are based on each yearโs January 1st assessment. Tax bill calculations are based on that assessment, after local levies and tax rates are known later in the year.
Keith notes that taxpayers cannot dispute their real estate tax bill when it arrives in December. She says that is why itโs important to review your assessment each year that your taxes are based on.
Keith tells taxpayers that if they get mail from their assessor, itโs probably a Notice of Changed Assessment, required by state law any time a total assessment of real property changes. She adds that unless thereโs a $500 or less change for agricultural land, then notices are not required.ย
Keith recommends taxpayers look closely at their notice for Open Book dates and times. Open Book is a formal time to review the tax roll and your assessment, and discuss with the assessor, before the assessment roll is finalized at the Board of Review.
