Dodge County Sheriff Encourages Safe Holiday Shopping

(Juneau) Holiday shopping is just around the corner, and the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is reminding those who plan to hit the stores to be safe. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says the most important thing to remember is it is just property.

“We haven’t seen it locally in [a] very long time, that we’ve got really any fights that happen at the stores,” says Schmidt. “Maybe some budging in line with their shopping carts [because] there are long lines, but outside of that, we haven’t had a whole lot.”

Schmidt says that people have been relatively patient, and that is very important. He says the last thing he wants to happen is for someone to get arrested when shopping. The sheriff adds that if someone does become impatient and is confrontational, the best thing to do is walk away.

“Don’t engage,” Schmidt says. “I know sometimes it’s hard to back down, but just walk away and avoid that confrontation, because you don’t wanna get yourself hurt or get yourself arrested.”

Schmidt also suggests going later in the day when it is less busy and avoid the doorbuster traffic.
