(Fall River) Dodge County school districts are encouraged to apply for the Beef in the Classroom grant. The program, started by the Wisconsin Beef Council, helps teachers strengthen their lessons about lean beef selection, storage, preparation, and nutrition. Teachers are reimbursed between $100 and $300 per school each year to buy and prepare beef with their students.
In the Fall River School District, Melissa Litherland utilized the grant last year to discuss cooking temperatures as well as host a tasting and food sensory lab. Litherland says this program is a great way to showcase beef in the classroom. She adds that students loved to cook with meat and she loved being able to explain farming practices, pricing, and production all in a farm to table way.
The fall grant application period will open next Monday, September 19th, and closes October 1st. The Wisconsin Beef Council received 130 grant applications last school year, reaching 9,227 students. In total, the Council granted $17,843 to continue beef education.
