Dodge County Mourns Loss of K9 Kid

(JUNEAU) For seven years, K9 Kid was there when Dodge County deputies needed him — tracking suspects, taking drugs off the street, and showing kids what service and loyalty look like. This week, the sheriff’s office announced the death of the retired police dog, remembering him as both a dedicated K9 and a beloved family member.

K9 Kid served with the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office from 2016 until his retirement in 2023. Born in the Netherlands, he was selected in May 2016 by Lt. Joseph Nicholas at Jessiffany Canine Services in Iron Ridge. From the start, the two worked every shift together, building what the department called an unbreakable bond.

Over his career, K9 Kid became a familiar and respected presence across the county. He was a member of the SWAT Team and the Drug Task Force and regularly represented the sheriff’s office at school visits and community events.

His impact went far beyond visibility. According to the sheriff’s office, K9 Kid assisted in 229 arrests and 565 deployments. He also played a role in the seizure of more than 93 pounds of illegal narcotics, with an estimated street value of $3.74 million, along with countless other patrol-related cases.

K9 Kid completed his final official shift on May 3, 2023, before retiring at home with Lt. Nicholas and his family. There, the department said, he wasn’t just a working dog — he was family.

In a statement, the sheriff’s office thanked K9 Kid for his loyalty, courage, and years of service, saying his legacy will continue to be felt throughout the agency and the community he helped protect.

“Rest easy, K9 Kid,” the statement said. “Thank you for everything.”
