Dodge County Health Officials Share Winter Safety Tips for Homes and Roads

(JUNEAU) The Dodge County Public Health Department is reminding residents to take extra steps to stay safe at home and on the road.

Officials say home heating fires and carbon monoxide poisoning are among the biggest winter risks. Residents are urged to keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heat sources, never use ovens or power strips to heat a home, and have furnaces and fireplaces inspected by professionals. Clearing snow from furnace exhaust and air intake pipes is also critical, along with making sure carbon monoxide detectors are installed and working.

The department is also stressing winter travel safety. Drivers should check weather and road conditions before heading out, delay non-essential travel during poor conditions, and let someone know their route and expected arrival time. On the road, officials recommend keeping gas tanks full, using proper winter tires, and carrying an emergency supply kit.
