(WISCONSIN) The DNR and local sheriffs recently teamed up for ATV and UTV safety. It was part of the fifth-annual Think Smart Before You Start enforcement campaign. Officers interacted with more than 1,600 operators and riders, discussing important operation guidelines and easy-to-follow safety regulations.
Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt says riders need to be cautious while on busier roadways.
โI would hate to have anybodyโฆlet alone any of our deputies roll up on another one of these fatalities,โ says Schmidt. โItโs no different than a traffic fatality with a vehicle. We roll up on these and itโs another family, itโs another brother, another sister, another mother, father, friends that are losing a loved one.โโฏโฏโฏ
There have been 34 fatal ATV and UTV crashes in Wisconsin so far this year. Officials say most of them were not wearing seatbelts or helmets, and alcohol and speed were also contributing factors.
