(Winnebago County) The state Department of Natural Resources sturgeon biologist, allegedly involved in a sturgeon egg caviar scheme, made his initial appearance in Winnebago County court. Ryan Koenigs pled not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of Theft and was released on a $500 signature bond Tuesday. A jury trial is scheduled for June 15th. Koenigs has been placed on administrative leave from his DNR post. The DNR and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have been investigating reports of caviar being purchased, sold, bartered and traded around the Lake Winnebago area since January of 2020.
