DNR Reminds Hunters to Be Safe During Turkey Hunting Season

(Madison) The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters and outdoor enthusiasts to be aware and stay safe during the 2024 spring turkey hunting season. Hunters and public land users may be sharing fields and forests during the season and need to be aware and alert of others in their area.

Hunters should follow safety rules, and non-hunters enjoying public lands should consider wearing blaze orange or other highly visible clothing. Hunter camouflage is an important part of turkey hunting that can also create a potential problem.

If someone wears clothing that makes them too camouflaged, hunters may not be able to see them, and they could accidently be mistaken as a turkey. Wearing the wrong colored camouflage can also put hunters at risk.

To dress properly and ensure safety, some tips from the National Wild Turkey Federation include making sure that accessories you carry that are red, white, or blue are not visible to the other hunters, do not over-camouflage by sitting in vegetation so thick that obscures your vision, and when using a human-blind or camouflage netting, maintain a clear field of view.
