BEAVER DAM – Beaver Dam officials say work continues on a multi-year effort to improve the health of Beaver Dam Lake, with a major carp removal project expected to begin later this summer.
An update presented to the Common Council says the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has hired a commercial fishing company to remove invasive carp from the lake, with work potentially starting as early as August if conditions are favorable.
Officials say the long-term goal is to remove more than one million pounds of carp over several years. The invasive fish stir up sediment, reduce water clarity and limit the growth of aquatic vegetation that provides habitat and food for other fish species.
City officials also noted that carp removal is only one part of a broader lake restoration strategy being developed in partnership with the DNR and local lake organizations to improve water quality and the overall health of Beaver Dam Lake.
