DNR Emerald Ash Bore Signs

(Madison) The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is encouraging property owners to watch for woodpecker damage to their ash trees this winter. If damage is found, property owners should make plans to act immediately in the spring.

Woodpecker damage, often called โ€œfleckingโ€ happens when birds peck away some of a treeโ€™s bark to access the larvae underneath. Flecking is a common early sign that a tree is infected with emerald ash bore.

In 2023, emerald ash borer was found in three additional northern Wisconsin counties and is now present in 69 of the 72. It is a common insect in the southern part of the state and woodpecker damage to ash trees is already widespread.

Property owners who spot woodpecker damage in their woodlot ash trees, are encouraged to consult a DNR or consulting forester for management advice. If detected in their early stages, trees can be treated with insecticide between mid-April and mid-May and are applied every one or two years.
